    Jouster is my Hero

I had to chime in, as I had a recent incident of 'protectiveness' with my Jouster, which still amazes me.

Jouster has always been just a bit protective of me. My parents are both retired and RV around the country for most of the year, but they come back and spend about 2 months every winter with me in my house. When I'm at work, Jouster and my dad are buds and he loves my mom, plays with her, begs her for treats and pets and is a generally sweet boy.

When I get home he is still sweet to them, but I am clearly his focus, and, if I'm in my room at the back of the house, he's got this habit of sitting in the door to the bedroom, then growling and running over to me whenever someone steps into the hallway. We've been working on it, and its gotten so that its not so much of a 'protective' sort of thing as it is an 'alert' sort of thing. I'm used to him doing this whenever there is someone around that triggers his 'alarm system', but I've never had an actual THREAT to my health before Sunday, last.

I was in the back of the house, working on something, when I heard Jouster barking in the front room. Usually, he's got this high, excited, "OMG I'm BARKING!!" sort of bark when he sees or hears something 'alarming' (like, you know, people walking by on HIS road, a squirrel running through HIS yard, or, even, OMG!!, a crow landing on HIS deck outside the back door, the horrors!!). I'm used to that bark and generally either ignore it or call him off in this 'Oh for heaven's sake, cut it out' manner. (yeah, we do this a lot, can you tell?)

But Sunday, the bark was a lot different -- low and serious and very very ... hmm, DEFINITIVE, I guess. Instead of 'OMG! I'm BARKING!!', I was hearing more of a "I'm so going to KILL you..." sort of tone in it. Freaked me out, esp as Jouster hadn't come running to get me. So I went to look.

When I got to the front room, i couldn't see anything, but as soon as I stopped in the door, Jouster moved toward me, then turned around and barked, that serious bark, three times at the door to our laundry room. Then he turned and Looked at me (not a glance, a very serious and clearly communicating Look), then Looked at the door and growled, low and mean. Then he took a couple steps forward, and growled again... and I could see he wasn't growling at the DOOR, he was growling at, of all things, the LAMP that was NEXT to the door.

    Yeah, I know. WTF?

When I moved into the room, saying "What is it?", he Looked at me then Looked at the lamp again, and, growling, moved up to peer into the lampshade, then turned and put himself very firmly and deliberately between me and the lamp, blocking me from approaching it until I actually stopped and asked him, again, "What is it? Show me." (We use 'Show me' when he's got something he wants and cannot reach -- he's supposed to show me, as best he can, where it is.)

So he Looks at me, then moves closer to the lamp and peers up into it, then Looks at me again and barks, once.

I swear, these dogs are SO intelligent, its scary!

So I moved up next to him, and crouched down and peered into the lamp -- and there was this great striped wasp inside.

I'm allergic to beestings, and this kind of wasp stung me once before. It was so very not pretty. And who the hell, in WA State, has WASPS at in JANUARY, when the temperatures are consistently below 35 degrees!?!

It gets better. After he'd seen I saw the wasp, he stopped growling and started just watching it. I went to get the wasp zapper stuff and came back to zap the wasp -- and it came out of the lampshade and started flying around the room.

Ordinarily, on sunny summer days, Jouster likes to chase and eat bees and flies. His tail wags and he looks all happy and excited, and runs in circles and has a grand old time.

    This time?

He didn't do ANY of that. Instead he actually THREW himself between the wasp and me, leaping up into the air with a growl to snap at it, and ended up redirecting it into the kitchen. Then he kept himself between the wasp and me until I told him it was all right, I had it and he should let me take care of it. I've never seen him act like that before, EVER. He was dead serious about keeping that thing away from me.

...once the wasp was in the kitchen, I was able to nail it with the zapper stuff, knock it into the sink, get it with the zapper stuff again, and blow it into the disposal, zap the stuff into the disposal for about 30 seconds, then turned on the disposal, with hot water running, for another minute and a half, then zapped the killer stuff into the sink AGAIN for another 30 seconds, drop the splash guard into place and zap THAT for a bit...

Suffice to say the wasp is very very VERY dead.

And Jouster is totally my hero.

    Hail?
Saturday, I went outside with Jouster, first thing in the morning and I thought it was hailing! Little balls of ice were peppering down onto the deck all around us in the morning light, and I could hear them falling all through the forest. It was gorgeous out -- lovely silver fog, and frost everywhere, and a blue sky above and I thought "How odd -- where is the hail coming from?"

So I stopped and I picked up a piece and I looked at it. And it was perfectly clear all the way through, and oddly shaped. All rounded on most sides, except one, where it had kind of a ... like a cup-like sort of indentation.

Took me a few minutes to figure out what it was.

....the heavy fog of the last few days had coated the trees in dew. The dew had dripped down to the ends of the branches on all the plants... but hadn't quite been heavy enough to drop all the way off. Then the frost had come in and frozen all those dewdrops into little, clear drops of ice.

Then the morning sun had come up, and warmed up the plants... and the ice connecting the icedrops to the plants had melted, letting the icedrops come falling away....like hail.

    It was really cool!

Has anyone else ever seen anything like that before? I never have!

    365 questions
Ok -- I've made a couple changes in how I'm going to handle the 365 questions. I've become aware of a couple of things and have decided to take a few steps to both keep the questions available to anyone who wants to see them (as I'd intended all along) and to keep some of the more private bits of my journal, well... private. Not that I mind people looking at them, but those of you on my flist know who and what I am and I don't feel uncomfortable sharing stuff with you. People who might happen to fall across my journal can stay or go, just fine. But I'd like to have an option for those who just want to see the questions without getting nailed in the face with all the personal stuff...

So, I've made another journal for the questions called [info]365_days_of_me. Please, feel free to friend that journal, and to share comments and questions over there! Its still me! And, bonus!, you can feel comfortable sharing that journal with anyone at all you like. That's what its there for.

I will also, however, continue to post my questions to this journal as well... but they will be flocked in this journal to keep it 'between friends' in my 'personal' journal.

Why can't I start your car?!
So... my dad came rushing in a few minutes ago, saying "I can't start your car! Why can't I start your car?"

And I got up and I said "I don't know, why can't you start my car?"

And he hands me the key he was using and says, all frustrated, "I don't know! Why CAN'T I start your car? What's wrong with it?!"

And I go, "I don't know!" So I take the key and I go out and I unlock and open the door, and I get in and I put the key in the ignition (everything seems normal so far!) and I step down on the clutch --

and suddenly Dad says, "....I know why I couldn't start your car."

-- and I turn the key in the ignition and the thing starts up just fine. And I turn and I grin at him and I say "I know why you couldn't start my car, too."

..........he forgot to step on the clutch. *snort* *giggle*

    I love my dad.

    ....well.

Apparently, 'ya bugger!' is a suitable substitute for 'bainne' the Irish word for 'milk'.

Or so my Rosetta Stone Software apparently believes.

....either that or it just figured out if I was frustrated enough to swear at it, it probably ought to let me move on!
